Under the Hood 2020 07 15
by Danno We are 6 1/2 months into 2020, and it's been a fascinating year already. Let's take another quick look under the hood year-to-date. There are any number of ways to break up the markets to try to understand what's really going on. A lot of it week to week and month to month has to do with emotion, momentum, and short-termism. I like to zoom out and look at it by Style, by Asset Class, and by Sector, so I can understand the larger themes. When I look at Style, I like to use Morningstar's proprietary style box. A style box is just a simple matrix of US LargeCaps, MidCaps, and SmallCaps along the vertical axis, and Value, Blend, and Growth across the horizontal axis. So from left to right and top to bottom, the same way that you read words on a page, it's LargeCap Value, LargeCap Blend, LargeCap Growth, then MidCap Value, MidCap Blend, MidCap Growth, then SmallCap Value, SmallCap Blend, SmallCap Growth.
